Wildlife

Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Pilanesberg National Park, which is home to Bakubung Lodge, ranks amongst the largest of the parks in South Africa and covers an area of some 55 000 hectares. The Park offers guests sightings of a wide diversity of animal and plant life. This includes 360 species of birds, the Big Five and many other South African animals. Operation Genesis, which involved the game fencing of the reserve and the reintroduction of endemic species, began during the late1970s.

The Park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found cohabiting with moist-area-limited impala, black-eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees. The Park has a rich array of southern African wildlife including the Big Five and many of the animal species found in southern Africa.

These include lions, elephants, white and black rhinos, buffaloes, leopards, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. The diversity of bird life is excellent with in excess of 360 species. Though some are migrants, many are permanent inhabitants. Their food sources vary with some eating carrion or live prey, while others eat seeds, fruit or tiny water organisms.

Junior Rangers Programme

For those families looking for the perfect getaway, Bakubung and Kwa Maritane Bush Lodges become the destinations of choice. With service standards no less than outstanding, parents and kids alike will be amazed at the way in which both lodges welcome visitors into a an even bigger family, the Legacy family, in a way that tops off a well needed family retreat. Located in the heart of the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park and only an hour and a half’s drive from Johannesburg, Bakubung and Kwa Maritane now also offer something special for children.

Apart from game drives, bush walks, birding and in-house entertainment, Bakubung and Kwa Maritane have developed something even more engaging, the Junior Ranger’s Programme. This allows parents to enroll their young ones in a unique, educational and, most importantly, fun experience.Under the supervision of trained staff, parents can rest assured that their children will be well taken care of whilst participating in a host of activities, thus ensuring a great getaway for the whole family.

Activities are geared around natural resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation offering a special opportunity to explore the Pilanesberg National Park. Activities have been created for children from the ages of 6 years old to that of 12 years old and aim to encourage an appreciation for nature, conservation and natural resources. From learning about the history of the Pilanesberg National Park, participating in wildlife walks allowing children the opportunity to find out more about wild animals, the sounds various birds make become prominent as guides teach one what to listen for as well as that of the purpose of the various plant life around the lodges.

Once activities have been completed, kids are presented with activity badges and stickers. When all 8 activities have been completed, and all 8 activity stickers and badges have been collected, the young ones will participate in a Junior Ranger pledge ceremony whereby the Kwa Maritane and Bakubung Junior Rangers are given a certificate portraying that they are now a part of the resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation initiative.

The saying goes, when your kids are happy, you are happy and therefore what better way to encourage your children to appreciate nature, than Bakubung and Kwa Maritane’s Junior Ranger Programme.Enrol your future Junior Rangers today for an experience full of fun and excitement.

The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld regions, commonly referred to as “Bushveld”. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur within this transition zone. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees, usually found in arid areas, cohabit with moist-area-limited impala, black-eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.

The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg Game Reserve – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago.
Pilanesberg Game Reserve is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature. The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills – the formation rises from the surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the “Pilanesberg Game Reserve Alkaline Ring Complex”. Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex. A number of rare (but not necessarily economically important) minerals occur in the park.

The Pilanesberg National Park rates high among the world’s outstanding geological phenomena. Pilanesberg Game Reserve has survived ages of erosion and stands high above the surrounding bushveld plains.

Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge

Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge

Construction on Kwa Maritane already commenced centuries ago. An ancient alkaline volcano fashioned the very hills that Kwa Maritane stands on today. Hence it's name, which literally means "Place of the Rock". From here, you can look out over the infinite plains adjacent to the Pilanesberg National Park - an area rich in wildlife and hosting around 365 species of birds. Perhaps it's these ideal natural surroundings that won us the "Best Game Lodge" Award at the 1998 and 2001 Conference & Exhibition Venue Awards. Or maybe it's just that we offer distinctive service in every way.

Lush Private Lodge

5* Lush is located on the Black Rhino Game Reserve – a private concession area within the malaria-free greater Pilanesberg National Park.

Lush Private Lodge

Lush is located on the Black Rhino Game Reserve – a private concession within the malaria-free greater Pilanesberg National Park (55 000ha/135 900ac). The park, encircled by the hills of a volcanic ring-dyke complex and containing both Kalahari and Lowveld biomes, is a wilderness Eden. Nearly all animal species endemic to Southern Africa are to be found here.

The development of the park is considered one of the most ambitious projects of its kind anywhere in the world. It began with Operation Genesis in 1979, which game-fenced the area and reintroduced long-vanished wildlife. Today, Pilanesberg is home to over 7 000 animals – including all of the Big Five, 25 other mammal species, 350-plus kinds of birds, and innumerable reptile and insect species.

As a guest of Lush, you are assured a private – and unique – safari experience, with the rare opportunity to see the black rhino. The lodge has traversing access to the whole of Pilanesberg, including the Black Rhino Game Reserve and the park’s limited-access Wilderness Area – established for the protection and breeding of this critically endangered animal, threatened by poaching.

Other successful park conservation initiatives are the Brown Hyena Project and Cheetah Project. The brown hyena is classified near threatened and is at risk due to the mistaken belief that they are harmful to livestock. The cheetah is currently classified vulnerable – though there is call for its reclassification as endangered – and is under threat from poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict.

Lush is a contemporary lodge, shaped around the environment. In fact, it is a shepherd’s tree – sheltered from the wind and warmed by the morning sun, between hill and plain – that marked the position of the main lodge. Its minimalistic décor and natural finishes put the focus on the view, which at once draws you outside. With this in mind, multi-level interior-flowing-to-exterior spaces are designed for outdoor living. Spend time between safari activities reading or playing board games on the couches, sipping coffee in the bar lounge – a favourite spot to rendezvous at any time of day – or stargazing from the deck.

Facilities:
  • Bar lounge serving the lodge’s own brand of specialty coffee, and a selection of local and international wines, beers, and spirits
  • Open-plan dining and lounge area warmed by two fireplaces in the cooler months
  • Breakfast bar for guests to help themselves to beverages and buffet choices
  • Viewing/dining deck with tables set out for meal times, coffee breaks, and sundowners
  • Boma for social outdoor dinners, with a barbeque, central firepit, and dining tables

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi with access throughout the lodge

LUXURY IN THE BUSH
Choose from three Bush-Facing and two Mountain-Facing Suites – distinguished only by their views. Covered walkways lead to each, interspersed between the trees and with their own private entrances. Wilderness-inspired interiors, innovative use of space, and extended fold-back glass doors mean you feel immersed in nature even when in your suite. Their décor gives a nod to the Lupini’s Italian heritage, though much of the furnishing is local, supporting South African artisans. Designed with every comfort in mind, your Suite is not simply a base from which to explore the surrounds, but a living space.

Activities in and around Morokolo Safari Lodge

The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of the Greater Pilanesberg National Park measuring 57 000 hectares. Situated in the north western corner of the Pilanesberg National Park, The Black Rhino Reserve is just under 2 500 hectares in size and represents the first portion of private land incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. It is a private concession with its own entrance on the north-western side of the park.

Elephant, buffalo and a variety of antelope often roam in this area as they take shelter in remote areas not accessible to other visitors to Pilanesberg National Park. Characterised by a beautiful forest of Tamboti trees and occasional sightings of the bad tempered Black Rhino, the Black Rhino Reserve is home to the BIG 5 (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, White & Black Rhino) as well as a wide variety of antelope species (including Sable, Tsetsebe, Eland, Kudu and Springbok) and the rare sightings of wild dog.

With a species list of over 354, the Black Rhino Reserve is also a true "birders paradise".

View Africa’s most impressive wildlife, including the renowned Big 5, on our morning and afternoon game drives in an open 4-wheel drive safari vehicle with our expert guide.

The Black Rhino Reserve
Black Rhino is a private game reserve, incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park on the North Western side. This lower lying reserve’s sweet veld vegetation complements the Pilanesberg’s predominantly mixed sour veld. This type of habitat is known to carry a wide variety of game species and sightings of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are over 350 bird species present. The reserve has its own private entrance on the Western side of the reserve.

The reserve is characterized by huge numbers of Tambuti trees and therefore we have regular sightings of the shy and scarce black rhino. These trees also play host to an incredibly wide variety of bird species thus making the area a birding paradise.

Guided Game Walks
Guests can also enjoy interpretive guided bush walks offering the bird watcher, botanist and the nature enthusiast the ultimate bush experience. The walk itself is relaxed and our experienced guide uses his vast knowledge of the bush to explain natural wonders. No persons under the age of 16 years are permitted to join the game walks. Kindly ensure to request this activity at the time of booking accommodation as game walks are subject to the availability of qualified guides.

4x4 Game Drives
We pride ourselves on presenting wildlife interaction that is sure to be the highlight of your stay. The game drives are daily and our experienced ranger will take you on a memorable trip introducing you to the tracks, movements, sights and sounds which give you a peak into the secrets of the African bush – guests can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species on our game drives. Children are permitted on drives at the discretion of the game ranger.

Pilanesberg National Park
The Pilanesberg National Park is 55 000 Hectares in extent and borders on the Sun City entertainment complex. The most remarkable feature of this destination is the 1200 million-year old volcano crater with Mankwe Lake in the centre. Because of its positioning between the Kalahari and Lowveld, the vegetation from both areas are located on this terrain. The Pilanesberg National Park is native to all species of animals that naturally occur in this region of South Africa including the big five, wild dog, and rarer species such as Brown Hyena, Tsessebe and Aardwolf. The Park also offers a number of picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, a walk in aviary, safari game drives and hot air balloon flights over the park.

General Information

  • Keep clothing colours as neutral and as light as possible, so you blend in better with the surrounding environment. Khaki, beige, brown and green are generally best, as darker and brighter colours attract unwanted mosquitoes and insects.
  • During certain times of the year malaria may be more prevalent in certain areas and we therefore suggest a mosquito repellent like Peaceful Sleep or something similar. Alternatively contact your local GP regarding the necessity of malaria prophylaxis.
  • A pair of comfortable walking shoes for bush walks or when off the game drive vehicle.
  • Meals are informal, so smart attire is not required.
  • Please pack a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, flashlight and binoculars.
  • Electricity at Tshukudu is a 220-volt alternating current system. Wall plug units take a round two-prong European plug. It is advisable to bring the necessary converter or adapter from your home country, should you need to charge cameras or laptops. Alternatively, international adaptors are available at the Reception Desk.
  • Remember to pack your camera as well as a video camera, along with all the necessary plugs, chargers and memory cards needed.
  • There is a Wi-Fi hotspot in the general public area of the veranda and reception.
  • Cellular phones work in most areas of South Africa and also in certain areas within the reserve, although it is not permitted to take cellular phones on game drive vehicles as they are considered an intrusion
  • All our units are supplied with amenities such as soap, shower gel and shampoo. You may, however, wish to bring your favourite toiletries with you.
  • The lodge offers a laundry service at a nominal additional rate.

When you visit Tshukudu, we ask that you leave all the trappings of city life behind - including your car. Guest vehicles can be parked in protected parking bay at Bakubung Bush Lodge.
