Mbazo Safari Lodge

5* Luxury Bush Lodge in Black Rhino Game Reserve

Mbazo Safaris Lodge is located in the Black Rhino Game Reserve forms an additional ‘corner’ of the Pilanesberg National Park. It is on the North West side of the Pilanesberg, with its own secured, private entrance that is situated on the western border, and with no boundary fences – wildlife is free to roam across both areas. They offer 5 individual rooms that offers the guest everything they need to have an amazing stay including 2 game drives per day. What lies at the core of Mbazo’s success is a dream that puts you, the guest, as well as the land, wildlife and people of Africa, at the heart of our business.

We started in the Hospitality business over forty years ago to live at the intersection of food, art and commerce. The only thing that has changed is our perspective and experience. Our mission is the same – to delight, inspire and be inspired. What began as a small storefront deli on church street Pretoria, South Africa in 1979, has evolved to become one of South Africa’s cream Hospitality firms.

Our job is to insure that a celebration reflects a client’s style, taste, vision, and yes – even their dreams. This belief has served us well for more than 40 years, and we have remained on the edge of culinary creativity, constantly refining ourselves and our food to make dreams become reality.

Unlike other hotels, Hotels pride themselves on offering our guests in-house award-winning restaurants and our food philosophy is simple: seasonal, ingredients to showcase the region’s finest flavours.

Our Creation Cycle is Deliberately Low-Tech
By going on a true discovery that has been crafted for each guest, you are assisting us to care for the people, fauna & flora of the loved destinations that you visit. People-centred service as authentic as Mbazo. The reason Mbazo came into existence was to provide jobs, skills and hope to people living in desperate poverty. Each Mbazo discovery is spiced with our promise to take Care of the Heart & Soul of what nature provides.

Our services, linen and packaging are hand-made by experienced crafters. We support small local suppliers and producers. Our wild ingredients are hand-harvested by people living in remote areas of Southern Africa where economic opportunities are almost non-existent.

The region is semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of 500mm (20in), the most of which falls during the summer months (December – February)

Located

Mbazo Safari Lodge is located on Black Rhino, a privately controlled 2100ha part of the Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Best Time to Visit

The animals in Pilanesberg National Park are non-migratory, as a result, rather than changing with the seasons, the safari experience continues to evolve throughout the year.

The optimal time to go birdwatching is from October to April.

Can the Whole Lodge be Booked?

Absolutely! The intimate lodging is inspired by the Red-Billed Buffalo Weaver. This bird has been observed in small family groups or in large flocks, thus you as a discerned guest can book the lodge as a couple, family or large flock, capable to serve up to 10 callers.

Is the Lodge Family Friendly?

Definitely! The resort welcomes guests of all ages.

There's also the Eco Garden's children's amusement and education area — the hub of fun and games.

Malaria Free Lodge

Our setting provides us an advantage in the healing stakes: we're in a tranquil hideaway surrounded by the boundless green of the Pilanesberg Crater — the color of wellbeing. There are in-suite spa therapies and yoga mats available, and you can keep the doors open in perfect seclusion, enabling the soundtrack of birdsong to stream in.

This sensation of well-being isn't restricted to massages and sun salutations; healthful food, luxurious accommodations, and personalized service round out the experience.

A Once-In-A-Lifetime Safari Adventure
There's no better place to celebrate your occasion than with a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will provide you and your partner or friends with an unforgettable experience – and a Mbazo Safari is at the top of the bucket list.

Private dinners, private lodging, customized experiences, and leisure... we'll make it all you want it to be - and more, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. All you have to do is send out invitations and pack your luggage, and we'll take care of the rest.

With only five full-service lodges on this 2100ha privately managed reserve, guests can expect a very personal safari experience. Being out here on your own, exploring the huge wilderness of mountains, plains, and the Pilanesberg crater, is humbling.
You'll get up close and personal with some of Africa's most spectacular animals.

A range of wildlife-based teambuilding experiences makes this venue stand out from the rest, and is within easy reach of both Johannesburg and Pretoria.
African Hills Safari Lodge & Spa caters for meetings, conferences, teambuilding initiatives and training courses in both the main lodge and Day Visitors Centre. Spa relaxation is available to conference delegates after or during a day of meetings, or as a spa voucher reward for later use “While frequenting Askari and hosting a national conference we could not have asked for much more” Michelev892 from Midrand describes her conference experience on Tripadvisor. “From the reception, functions, meals, menus and every staff member encountered, we couldn’t have asked for more. The staff were exemplary.
Can’t wait to come again”.
Plumari Private Game Reserve is set within a pristine wilderness area of over 5000 hectares with natural African bushveld and an abundance of flora, fauna, birdlife and wildlife. Two game drives, each approximately 2 – 2,5 hours in duration, are scheduled daily. An elephant ‘touch and feed’ experience will make your conference unforgettable.
The main lodge, which is in fact the old Bodenstein family farmhouse, overlooks the Elephant Dam and invites guests to take a step back in time while admiring South African décor pieces dating back to the 1800’s. Slipper baths, a coal stove, wash stands, luggage chests, antique Oregon cupboards and tables are subtly placed within the four-star surrounding, to emphasize the captivating history of the Magaliesberg area.
African Hills Safari Lodge has one of the largest private collections of ox wagons, carts and other animal drawn vehicles from the period 1800 to 1900. A variety of items from the Boer War and San Bushmen rock carvings tell the history of the area, which is also known for the nearby Battle of Nooitgedacht. Examples are available in the museum, which is a popular venue for teambuilding or pre-dinner drinks. The Day Visitors Center is abundant with African symbology, rich earthy colours and unique African décor focal points. All conference venues are based at the Day Centre and afford great views of the Magalies mountain range and reserve.
We look forward to hosting you and your team.

African Hills Safari Lodge & Spa is situated next to the Cradle of Human Kind, a World Heritage site in the Magalies Meander and Crocodile Ramble region.

African Hills Safari Lodge & Spa is easily accessible by road and within an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, South Africa. African Hills Safari Lodge is situated in the Plumari Private Reserve on 10,000 hectares of the African wilderness.

Directions to African Hills Safari Lodge
From OR Tambo International Airport
Follow sign to Johannesburg until you reach the interchange with the N1 highway. From there follow the sights N1 North/Roodepoort or N1 Pretoria. In other words, keep going straight initially, but then get into the left hand lane to take the slip road that turns hard to the left, do not continue on the main R24 road to Johannesburg.

The road will then turn in a circle and take you onto the N1 north, where you should follow it to Roodepoort past Sandton. Take the 14th Avenue off-ramp. At the next intersection (Hendrik Potgieter) turn right and go on the on-tamp onto Hendrik Potgieter and head towards Krugersdorp. Follow this road past Makro all the way to the N14/R28 traffic lights (a SASOL garage will be on the far left hand side of the intersection).

Continue straight over until you reach a T-Junction. Turn right at the T-Junction heading on the R563 to Hekpoort. Remain on the right hand side, do not take the N14 to the left. Follow the R563 over the Hekpoort hills towards the Magaliesberg. When you reach a T-Junction, turn left onto the R560. Remain on this road for about 8km (5 miels) until you see the Doornhoek (Plumari Africa/Plumari Game Lodge) turnoff to the right. Take this turnoff and continue on the dirt road for about 6km (3 miles) until you reach the Plumari Game Lodge on the right-hand side.

Inspired by the grace and carriage of these beautiful animals, Thutlwa Safari Lodge lends itself to relaxation in the heart of the bush, with attention paid to even the smallest detail.

At Thutlwa, we strive to offer you as much fluidity during your stay as possible – with no restrictive itineraries and no time limits. You are also welcome to bring young children and toddlers along on game drives – unlike most lodges that cater to the wider public.

The lodge has been designed with large families and groups in mind. The open-plan design lends itself to that ‘home-away-from-home’ feeling, with all the necessary creature comforts one could expect from a luxurious, exclusive-use lodge.

Malaria-Free Area

If you’re looking to travel with young children or babies, the Black Rhino Game Reserve (as well as the greater Pilanesberg area) is a safe option as it’s one of the few Big 5 bushland areas deemed malaria-free.

ABOUT THE BLACK RHINO GAME RESERVE
Black Rhino is a private game reserve that forms an additional ‘corner’ on the Pilanesberg National Park. It is on the North West side of the Pilanesberg, with its own secured, private entrance that is situated on the western side of the reserve. While ecological conditions at Black Rhino are very similar to that of  Pilanesberg, a noticeable difference is the sweet veld vegetation which complements Pilanesberg’s predominantly mixed sour veld.

Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino (black and white) and the endangered African wild dog all roam free on the reserve. Welcome to Big 5 country! Antelope species to try and tick-off your sightings list include eland, sable, impala, gemsbok, tsessebe as well as springbok.

If you’re up for a challenge, keep your eyes peeled for the less popular ‘small 5’, namely the elephant shrew, the antlion, the buffalo weaver, the leopard tortoise and the rhino beetle.

As per the Lodges’ namesake giraffes are also abundant on this reserve. There are over 354 bird species waiting to be spotted and identified by those avid bird enthusiasts.

ACCESS TO PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK
The Black Rhino Game Reserve has established traversing rights with the North West Parks and Tourism Board whereby the privately-owned lodges within the Black Rhino Game Reserve are entitled to cross from the Black Rhino Game Reserve into the Pilanesberg National Park.

This allows you to enjoy the privacy of the reserve along with the richness of the national park, and to experience the abundant sights and sounds of the bush from the comfort of Thutlwa’s 10-seater, open safari vehicle.

Mini-Ranger Course

If you are aged 6 years or older, and if you have dreams of becoming a game ranger just like our very ‘smart’ Mziki game rangers, why not ask mom and dad to enrol you in Mziki’s Mini-Ranger programme.
From vehicle preparation and inspections, to identifying different animal calls and sounds, recognising different trees and their uses to tracking and navigating you will soon know all there is to know to become a top-class game ranger. At the end of the programme you will even receive a certificate to say that you have completed the mini-ranger programme and have your photo taken which will then be added to the Mziki Wall of Fame.
The Mziki Mini-Ranger programme is tailor-made according to age and the duration of your stay and even better news is that it is free of charge.
You can also look forward to the following:
Camp treasure hunt:
A fun experience where you will have to find and collect specific items around the lodge. There will be clues for you to solve and items that you will have to identify with the help of the rangers.
Cultural experience:
Our game rangers will also tell you more about the “Bushmen” (Khoisan) people of southern Africa and their origins. Make sure to ask lots of questions!
Quiz:
Listen carefully at everything that the rangers tell you. At the end of the programme there will be a fun quiz.
