TWICE-DAILY GAME DRIVES
Every day, our skilled and passionate rangers will take you on an adventure & lesson in nature, into the untouched wilderness of the Pilanesberg National Park & Black Rhino Game Reserve, with twice daily game drives. Marvel at the big 5 & take in the stunning scenery, while enjoying a morning coffee, or an afternoon sundowner during your rest stop.

GUIDED BUSH WALKS
Our guided bush walks are an inclusive activity (no additional cost), however, when the bush walk will take place and the duration of the walk, is subject to our rangers’ availability, as well as some other operational logistics around the daily schedule at the lodge, and our occupancy. Kindly let your Lush
reservations consultant know if you are interested in participating in a bush walk, so we can note the request on your booking.

BUSH WALKS RULES & TIPS

• Age restriction: from 16 years to 60 years old;
• Guests over 60 years old, as well as ladies who are pregnant, need to provide a letter from their doctor, confirming they are fit to partake in the activity;
• Any cardiovascular or other medical concerns must be disclosed to the guide at the time of booking;
• Guests with serious allergies to insects or plants should carry the appropriate medication and emergency treatments;
• Please note that walks take place on uneven terrain and there are some inclines and declines; guests should be moderately fit, and be able to walk in uneven terrain unassisted;
• Walks are generally 3 – 5 km, at a mostly leisurely pace;
• Wear light, comfortable, and neutral coloured clothing for your bush walk, and remember to wear a hat and sunscreen.

BY ROAD
Only 2,5 – 3 hours’ drive from Johannesburg, guests have the option to either self-drive, or take a road transfer to Lush.

Directions to Lush By Road for self-driving:

• From Johannesburg, take the R512 past Hartbeespoort Dam and exit onto the N4 towards Rustenburg
• Travel along the N4, then take the R556 (Sun City/Pilanesberg National Park) exit
• Turn right at the stop onto the R556, and continue on towards Sun City
• Pass the Sun City gate and then Sun Village Shopping Centre (both on the right)
• At the four-way stop, turn right onto the R565 Derdepoort road
• Continue on for approx. 27km – the entrance to Black Rhino Game Reserve is on the right
• Friendly gate staff will direct guests on to Lush

ROAD TRANSFERS
Road transfers to and from the lodge can be booked directly with our preferred suppliers. Please enquire with your Lush reservations consultant for assistance and a quotation for your required road transfers.

BY AIR
Currently, the Pilanesberg Airport is unfortunately not operational for commercial flights, however, chartered flights are still possible, and can be arranged through referral by our reservations team.
Guests would then need to take a short 45-minute road transfer from the airport to the lodge. Please enquire with your Lush reservations consultant for more information and further assistance.

The best way to travel to Lush by air, would be by helicopter. Guests will land in a dedicated landing area, which is just 10-minutes’ drive from the lodge, in the Black Rhino Headquarters, and will be collected by the team from the landing area.
Should you wish to travel to Lush by helicopter, please ask your Lush reservations consultant to assist you with a quotation, and further details.

Lush is a contemporary lodge, shaped around the environment. Minimalistic décor and natural finishes put the focus on the view, and with this in mind, multi-level interior-flowing-to-exterior spaces are designed for outdoor living. The lodge is partially fenced, allowing for closer, and more intimate game viewing experiences.
Throughout the lodge guests will find intimate areas which they can retreat to in between game activities. Spend time playing board games on the couches, sip coffee in the bar lounge, do some stargazing from the main deck, or enjoy a delicious meal, while immersed in the sights and sounds of the surrounding bush. Complimentary Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the lodge.

ENSURING YOUR COMFORT
WEATHER
Average temperatures in mid summer (January) range from a low of 19°C/66°F to a high of 31°C/88°F, and in midwinter (July) from a low of 4°C/39°F to a high of 21°C/70°F.
Average annual rainfall is 622mm/24in, and usually occurs in the form of afternoon thundershowers during the period from December to March.

WHAT TO WEAR AND PACK

Comfort is the order of the day, though you may wish to dress more elegantly for dinner i.e. sport shirts and slacks for men, dresses or blouses and pants for women. For game drives and bush walks, wearing neutral-coloured, natural fibre clothing is recommended, and we suggest packing the following items to ensure you are all set for your safari experience:

• Warm pullover and windproof jacket (evenings and the winter months can be chilly)
• Sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
• Insect repellent (provided by the lodge, though you may wish to bring along your preferred brand)

Payments & Cancellations

Deposit Policy

For all bookings made within 30 days of travel
Full payment Is required within 48 hours of your booking.
For all bookings made more than 30 days of travel
A 50% deposit Is required within 48 hours of your booking and the balance 30 days prior to arrival.
Payment can be made via bank transfer, credit card (Master/Visa) or bitcoin.

Cancellation Terms

• Lush Private Lodge reserves the right to cancel any reservation based on the non-payment of either the deposit or the balance of payment, without notice. Such cancellation may attract cancellation fees as set out hereunder.
• In the event of a reservation being cancelled by or on behalf of the traveller in writing after Lush Private Lodge has issued confirmation, the following cancellations fees will apply:
• Cancellations made with more than 60 days to travel forfeit the 20% deposit
• Cancellations made with 60 days or less to travel forfeit the full payment
• No refunds are made for missed services, except in verifiable extenuating circumstances. Verifiable claims will only be considered if received in writing within thirty (30) days of the service being missed, and any refunds made will be at the discretion of Lush Private Lodge. Compassionate circumstances will be taken into account for cancellations due to uninsurable events.

Travel Insurance:

It is the responsibility of each visitor to Lush Private Lodge to ensure that adequate and comprehensive travel insurance is in place from the time of confirmation of a booking at Lush Private Lodge and that details of such insurance are available during the time of travel. Such travel insurance must cover the visitor against all risks including but not limited to costs of cancellation and curtailment, damage, delay, evacuation, medical treatment, hospitalization, illness, inconvenience, injury, loss, repatriation and theft. Lush Private Lodge cannot accept any liability for any of these events under any circumstances.

RESTAURANT SHONGOLOLO IS A GOURMET ADVENTURE
A Gourmet Adventure Awaits

From start to completion, dining at Restaurant Shongololo is a gourmet adventure. Guests are served various dishes in theatrical settings, sparking all their senses and making the dining experience thrilling and interactive.

To get to the gallery and the restaurant beyond, you must first visit a modern grange’s veranda. Mbazo House was deliberately constructed to set the tone for Restaurant Shongololo’s elegant dining experience. It was named after the Great Kruger Tusker, which inspired architect Francois van der Westhuizen’s dramatic modern safari style. Dining at Shongololo is a delicious adventure from start to finish with an emphasis on traditional African flavours. Guests are offered a variety of foods in theatrical settings, which stimulate all of their senses and make the eating experience exciting and participatory.

 The weather  

The average maximum temperature ranges from 21°C/70°F in July to 35°C/95°F in January, with the lowest average minimum temperature happening in July.

The region is semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of 500mm (20in), the most of which falls during the summer months (December – February)

Rain is usually in the form of thundershowers, with a downpour that lasts no more than a few minutes.

Mbazo Safari Lodge is located on Black Rhino, a privately controlled 2100ha part of the Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Best Time to Visit

The animals in Pilanesberg National Park are non-migratory, as a result, rather than changing with the seasons, the safari experience continues to evolve throughout the year.

The optimal time to go birdwatching is from October to April.

Can the Whole Lodge be Booked?

Absolutely! The intimate lodging is inspired by the Red-Billed Buffalo Weaver. This bird has been observed in small family groups or in large flocks, thus you as a discerned guest can book the lodge as a couple, family or large flock, capable to serve up to 10 callers.

• If cancelled up to 61 days prior to arrival, 10% cancellation fee of the full booking value (inclusive of VAT) will be charged
• If cancelled 31 to 60 days prior to arrival, 25% cancellation fee of the full booking value (inclusive of VAT) will be charged
• If cancelled 15 to 30 days prior to arrival, 75% cancellation fee of the full booking value (inclusive of VAT) will be charged

Sundown Country Estate is situated in the greater Pilanesberg region and is a short 12km drive from the Sun City Resort and the malaria-free Big 5 Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The hotel is a well-known icon, and a popular retreat for those looking for a bushveld getaway, offering guests a tranquil environment to while away one’s time sipping a chilled chardonnay at our poolside bar. Sundown Country Estate caters for a broad spectrum of clientele, ranging from the weary FIT guest right through to the larger Groups, Incentive & Corporate Conferencing guest. The conference facilities can accommodate up to 200 delegates and has all of the required equipment necessary.

The hotel is uniquely positioned on a 800ha reserve, which is home to a variety of general plains game such as zebra, giraffe, warthog, impala, healthy bird life… to name a few. A safari on the reserve can be arranged for guests with our friendly and hospitable staff at the main reception. The central guest facilities at Sundown Country Estate includes two indoor dining areas – namely the Aloes Restaurant and the Pilanesberg Restaurant which also has an outside terrace overlooking the swimming pool area. The main indoor bar is a welcome reprieve from the hot African sun, with an extensive variety of chilled beverage to quench one’s thirst. Alternatively, our poolside bar, which overlooks our swimming pool and manicured gardens, is a popular choice for those guests wanting to soak up the sunshine. There is also a gym facility on offer to all guests staying with us, which has a variety of exercise equipment on hand.

Accommodation at Sundown Country Estate comprises of 42 twin rooms, 42 double rooms and 16 family rooms, offering a generous capacity of 242 beds – all featuring air-conditioning, satellite TV, tea/coffee making facility, mini-safes, hairdryers and in room telephones (communicate to the hotel reception or make an external phone call).

A variety of activities are available through the hotel. Quad biking, horse riding, mini-game drive, mountain biking, are just a few to mention – all of which are conducted on the 800ha reserve that the hotel is situated on. A comprehensive list of these activities can be obtained from the main reception at the hotel.

For most of our guests, the thrill of seeing Africa’s mighty Big 5 is the highlight of their experience whilst staying with us. Sundown Country Estate will also offer guests the opportunity to take part in either a mid-morning, afternoon or full day safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Guests will be transferred to the Pilanesberg Reserve whereby they will be greeted by their knowledgeable safari guide – ready to show them the magnificent fauna & flora of this impressive game reserve. The Pilanesberg safaris are conducted through a specific operator which has partnered with the hotel, ensuring that the guests overall experience and expectations are not only met but exceeded. Bookings are on a request basis and all information is obtainable from the main Reception at Sundown Country Estate .

Bush Braai

Bush braais are held (weather permitting) every Wednesday and Saturday night. If you would like to book a bush braai on an alternative night, a minimum of 30 people is required. If numbers drop below 30, the full rate for 30 people will be charged.

Boma dinner costs (2025) R 540.00 per adult, R270 for kids aged 6-12yrs and R330 for teens between the ages of 13-17yrs.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

• All rates are quoted in ZAR and include Value Added Tax (VAT) at the prevailing rate.
• Check-in time is from 15h00, and the rooms should be vacated by 10h00.
• Due to the immigration Act no.19 of 2004, positive personal identification will be required to be presented upon check-in. A valid passport or ID document will be acceptable.
• A refundable breakage deposit of R5 000.00 will be required upon check-in.
• The Hotel reserves the right to cancel any bookings where 50% or full payment is not received within 7 days of making the booking.

• If the reservation is cancelled less than 14 days prior to arrival a 50% cancellation fee will apply.
• If cancelled 7 days or less prior to arrival a 100% cancellation fee will apply.
• A 10% admin fee will be retained for cancellations made after the card has been charged.

Junior Rangers

Legacy Junior Rangers Programme is available for all children aged 6-12 years. Activities are geared around natural resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation offering a special opportunity to explore the Pilanesberg National Park. The Junior Rangers Program is available at a small additional cost to parents and usually takes 2 days to complete. On completion of the program, children will be including in a graduation ceremony and will be given a certificate and badges for activities completed.

Mini-Ranger Course

If you are aged 6 years or older, and if you have dreams of becoming a game ranger just like our very ‘smart’ Mziki game rangers, why not ask mom and dad to enrol you in Mziki’s Mini-Ranger programme.
From vehicle preparation and inspections, to identifying different animal calls and sounds, recognising different trees and their uses to tracking and navigating you will soon know all there is to know to become a top-class game ranger. At the end of the programme you will even receive a certificate to say that you have completed the mini-ranger programme and have your photo taken which will then be added to the Mziki Wall of Fame.
The Mziki Mini-Ranger programme is tailor-made according to age and the duration of your stay and even better news is that it is free of charge.
You can also look forward to the following:
Camp treasure hunt:
A fun experience where you will have to find and collect specific items around the lodge. There will be clues for you to solve and items that you will have to identify with the help of the rangers.
Cultural experience:
Our game rangers will also tell you more about the “Bushmen” (Khoisan) people of southern Africa and their origins. Make sure to ask lots of questions!
Quiz:
Listen carefully at everything that the rangers tell you. At the end of the programme there will be a fun quiz.

Birding

Birders will delight in Mziki Safari Lodge’s excellent bird-watching opportunities. Bordering the 2,000-hectare Vaalkop Dam, considered one of the top three birding areas in the country, Mziki Private Game Reserve is home to several hundred species of birds. The mighty Hex river runs through the reserve and into the dam on which Mziki guests can enjoy barge cruises to get up close and personal to the birdlife.

Archery

Take your aim and try your hand at archery, available within the safe confines of Mziki Safari Lodge. A target and bows and arrows are provided for willing archers seeking to perfect their targeting skills.

Fishing

Keen anglers will adore the myriad of fishing opportunities available at Mziki Safari Lodge, with the 8km of the mighty Hex river flowing through the reserve and providing the perfect environment for fly and bait fishermen. Fish species that can be caught here include Yellow fish, Blue and Red curper, carp and barbel. For the sake of our rather vocal, hungry Fish eagles, Mziki Safari Lodge exercises a catch and release policy.

Barge Cruises

The mighty Hex river flows through Mziki Safari Reserve providing over 8km of river frontage through the reserve. A particular highlight among guests is the convivial Mama Hippo barge cruises that Mziki Safari Lodge offers along Hex river into the Vaalkop dam. Depending on the water levels, guests can enjoy a different encounter with the African bushveld, this time from the water’s side, watching the crocodile and water birds go about the daily business while enjoying are refreshing drink.

Bush walks

Get up close and personal to the bush as you accompany one of our knowledgeable rangers on a bush walk to observe unobstructed wildlife behaviour. Visit areas that cannot be explored by vehicle and gain first-hand knowledge of some of Africa’s hidden secrets on foot, surrounded by the cheerful chattering of birds.

Game viewing

Home to three of the Big Five – Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino – Mziki Safari Lodge offers a malaria-free environment in which families can enjoy safari viewing in a safe, comfortable and relaxed environment. Mziki Safari Lodge does not have an age restriction for game viewing with families catered for on their own game vehicles so as to ensure their comfort and that of other lodge guests. From OR Tambo International to Brits:

• As you exit the airport turn onto the R21 towards Pretoria.
• Follow the highway until the N1 turnoff.
• Turn onto the N1 north, towards Polokwane, Bela Bela.
• Follow the N1 to the N4, do not turn towards Witbank, take the second N4 off ramp towards Rustenburg.
• Go through 2 tollgates, about 10 Rand each.
• Take the R511, Brits turnoff.
• Turn right onto the R511 and drive through Brits, do not turn off and follow the R511 towards Thabazimbi.
• 36 km after Brits turn left towards Vaalkopdam and Beestekraal.
• At the T-junction turn left, after 1 km turn right. Follow the road for a few kilometers until you see the sign for Mziki Safari Lodge on the right hand side.

From Lanseria to Mziki:

• Follow the R 512 towards Broederstrom.
• After 7km turn left, follow R 512 for 10km, turn right towards Sun City.
• Follow R 512 to Sun City for another 15 km and turn left on to N4 towards Rustenburg.
• After 15km take turn off N4 and follow direction to Sun City.
• Drive towards Sun City for exactly 40 km, at stop street turn right towards Beestekraal.
• After 20 km you see a large water tower on your left and a sign on your left to Mziki Safari Lodge.
• Once you are on the dirt road: Drive through the open gate, along the middle road, and follow the road around the hill to the Mziki Safari Lodge Gate.
• Phone the lodge 071 355 4334 for access.
• Enter the gate and please wait for the gate to close automatically behind you.
• Continue straight down the main road until you fnd a fork in the road and take the right hand road.
• Follow this road to the lodge and park in the covered parking area provided.

From Brits on 511: Drive 36 km, then turn left on Beestekraal road for 4.3 km. At the T-junction turn left for 1.6km. This
road makes a right bend and has some potholes. After 5.4 km you will find out entrance dirt road on the right hand side
(brown Mziki sign). Drive up towards the water reservoir on the hill, keep right and drive around the hill and go downhill
until you see our South Gate entrance gate on your left, approx. 800m. Call or use whatsapp as signal is very limited on
+27 713554334 and follow this road until you arrive at the lodge, approx. 1.5 km.

Accessibility:

Please note that the lodges are not considered accessible as they do not have key accessibility features.
The lodges may be suitable for guests with reduced walking ability as each lodge has at least one suite with a wheelchair-friendly entrance (wide door, ramp/single level).

Kubu Metsi: Kubu House (the ‘extra’ fifth unit - not included in the standard Kubu lodge)
The living areas (kitchen, lounge, dining, outdoor dining) are single level and wheelchair friendly.
However, the suites are connected to the main living area lodge by pathways (wooden boardwalk or paved), some with steps. Most steps are low and wide.
The viewing decks are raised and there are a few steps; therefore not wheelchair accessible.
The game viewing vehicles are accessed by steps.
Nkala’s family suite is ideal for a guest needing a carer to sleep nearby. There is an interleading door between the main suite and a smaller room with two single beds, ensuite bathroom and exterior door.

Cancellation Policy:

• If cancelling 7 days OR less before arrival, you forfeit 100% of the booking total
• If cancelling 14 days OR less before arrival , forfeit 50% of the booking total
• If cancelling 21 days or less before arrival , forfeit 25% of total booking

Cancellation Policy

• Cancel up to 7 days before check in and get a 50% refund, minus service fees.

Please note that the lodges are not considered accessible as they do not have key accessibility features.
The lodges may be suitable for guests with reduced walking ability as each lodge has at least one suite with a wheelchair-friendly entrance (wide door, ramp/single level).

Kubu Metsi: Kubu House (the ‘extra’ fifth unit - not included in the standard Kubu lodge)
The living areas (kitchen, lounge, dining, outdoor dining) are single level and wheelchair friendly.
However, the suites are connected to the main living area lodge by pathways (wooden boardwalk or paved), some with steps. Most steps are low and wide.
The viewing decks are raised and there are a few steps; therefore not wheelchair accessible.
The game viewing vehicles are accessed by steps.
Nkala’s family suite is ideal for a guest needing a carer to sleep nearby. There is an interleading door between the main suite and a smaller room with two single beds, ensuite bathroom and exterior door.

• If cancelling 30 days or less before arrival, forfeit 20% of total booking

VIEWING DECK

• Spend a lazy afternoon or self-indulgent morning relaxing on our Viewing Deck, whilst keeping an eye out for one of the elusive Big 5 coming to quench their thirst.   The Viewing Deck is also a treat for avid birders, as we are often visited by a myriad of the 300 bird species found in the area.
• The viewing deck is an easily accessible 70 meters from the Main Lodge.

 

JUNGLE GYM

• Situated in an enclosed Boma 30 meters away from the Main Lodge,  the Jungle Gym provides the perfect space for the little ones to enjoy themselves in the comfort of their own special place.

Travel along the N4 and take the R556 exit to Sun City. From the gate of Sun City continue travelling in the direction of Rustenburg for approximately 4 km on the R556. At the 4 way stop street, turn right and travel approximately 30km on the R565 where you will find the entrance of Black Rhino Game Reserve on your right hand side. It is a tar road all the way to the entrance of the Reserve. On arrival at the Black Rhino Reserve gate, please state that you are staying at Lodge Number 15 – Tambuti Lodge.

Black Rhino is a private game reserve, incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park on the North Western side. This lower lying reserve’s sweet veld vegetation complements the Pilanesberg’s predominantly mixed sour veld. This type of habitat is known to carry a wide variety of game species and sightings of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are over 350 bird species present. The reserve has its own private entrance on the Western side of the reserve.

The reserve is characterized by huge numbers of Tambuti trees and therefore we have regular sightings of the shy and scarce black rhino. These trees also play host to an incredibly wide variety of bird species thus making the area a birding paradise.

4x4 Game Drives

We pride ourselves on presenting wildlife interaction that is sure to be the highlight of your stay. The game drives are daily and our experienced ranger will take you on a memorable trip introducing you to the tracks, movements, sights and sounds which give you a peak into the secrets of the African bush – guests can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species on our game drives. Children are permitted on drives at the discretion of the game ranger. The Pilanesberg is situated in the transition zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld, making it exceptional for spotting all kinds of wildlife. The ecology of the national park is unlike any other in the country, and almost every animal native to South Africa is found here.

Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park is 55 000 Hectares in extent and borders on the Sun City entertainment complex. The most remarkable feature of this destination is the 1200 million-year old volcano crater with Mankwe Lake in the centre. Because of its positioning between the Kalahari and Lowveld, the vegetation from both areas are located on this terrain. The Pilanesberg National Park is native to all species of animals that naturally occur in this region of South Africa including the big five, wild dog, and rarer species such as Brown Hyena, Tsessebe and Aardwolf. The Park also offers a number of picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, a walk in aviary, safari game drives and hot air balloon flights over the park.
