Summer (October – March):
Winter (April – September):
Summer in the Pilanesberg is marked by warmer temperatures, ranging from 26°C to 30°C,
and more frequent rainfall, with the region receiving around 622mm during this period.
While the landscape becomes lush and green, which is ideal for photography,
the dense vegetation can make wildlife harder to spot. Nonetheless, summer offers beautiful
scenery and the opportunity to see young animals born after the rains. In winter, controlled burns may occur in certain areas of the park as part of veld management.
These are carefully monitored and essential to maintaining the ecological balance. Winter is
also a particularly good time to spot lions, as they tend to be less cautious and more visible
during the day.
SUMMER CLOTHING :
Lightweight clothing and swim wear as well as a light jacket for game drives.
WINTER CLOTHING :
Lightweight clothing and swim wear for daytime and a warm insulated jacket, beanie and scarf for game drives.

Buffalo Thorn Lodge gets
its name from the Buffalo Thorn tree (Ziziphus Mucronata) which is
small to medium-sized.
It is colloquially known in Afrikaans as the ‘Blinkblaar
Wag-‘n-Bietjie’. The
‘Blinkblaar’ refers to the shiny leaves while
‘Wag-‘n-Bietjie’ literally means
‘wait a while’ in English. Deriving its name from
the paired and straight-hooked thorns which attach themselves
mercilessly to passersby, it requires a lengthy amount of time to
extricate oneself!
The Buffalo Thorn tree has many varied uses among different cultures
and beliefs. The fruit can be used to make beer and it is rumoured that
chewing the leaves serves as an aphrodisiac! Some believe that the tree
is immune to lightning making it safe to shelter under during a
thunderstorm, while the Zulu people believe the “z”
shaped thorns protect graves and put souls to rest.
Ivory Tree Game Lodge is situated in the north eastern region of the Pilanesberg National Park, the closest point of entry is through Bakgatla Gate. Nestled in the basin of an ancient amphitheater divided by riverine woodlands and elephant trails lies an exclusive lodge development site. The images below depict several aspects of the lodge. The central facility includes, stunning feature pool, bar, conference room, dinning room, boma, reception and curio shop.

Highlights

Conferences | Meetings
Ivory Tree has included a dedicated conference room among its facilities, please enquire into the availability of conference room equipment before concluding your conference planning. Alongside is a thumbnail of a proposed seating layout. This specific plan indicates a class room type layout and makes provision for 70 delegates. In our opinion, however, 80 delegates seated in this configuration would be the maximum possible.
If the idea of another routine game lodge experience raises little more than a sigh, gets you running to the doctor for a sick note, meeting with the reserve bank for assistance with payment, and where some lazy lodge manager tells you what you can't do, then this is just the answer for you.
Tailor-made Conservation Conferences and Incentives
During conferences and Incentives at our lodges we are frequently approached by groups enquiring about participation in conservation exercises. This idea prompted us to integrate conservation with the guest experience. In short we are now able to involve guests in the process of routine data gathering to determine condition and genetic mapping amongst other things.
Conference requirements frequently conflict with the routine private game lodge programme, it has therefore become necessary for us to tailor make each experience to suit the requirements of a particular conference or incentive. This often results in game drives being amended or cancelled to permit adequate session time. For this reason we would welcome the opportunity of presenting a tailor-made itinerary where the client is not required to pay for activities not participated in.
These programmes are available at both Ivory Tree and Kapama, and the range of camps and capacity will ensure that your next conference or incentive provides the best experience yet.
The Safari Experience
Most of our guests are at Ivory Tree for the thrill of the open vehicle safari. Ivory Tree uses custom built 10 seater open game viewers which permit maximum all around visibility. The park is home to a wide variety of general game including the Big 5, in addition both species of rhino occur, namely black and white, and cheetah and wild dog.
Each group of guests is assigned a personal guide who is tasked with interpreting the sights and sounds of the African bush. Your guide will spend time with you at dinners as well and is always around to ensure that you remain comfortable during your stay with us.
We offer a wide variety of fun-filled leisure activities for couples, families or groups. A list of activities can be found here:

morning or evening game drive. Driving in an open safari vehicle, along

How to get to Ivory Tree Game Lodge

From Johannesburg
From Pretoria
Construction on Kwa Maritane already commenced centuries ago. An ancient alkaline volcano fashioned the very hills that Kwa Maritane stands on today. Hence it's name, which literally means "Place of the Rock". From here, you can look out over the infinite plains adjacent to the Pilanesberg National Park - an area rich in wildlife and hosting around 365 species of birds. Perhaps it's these ideal natural surroundings that won us the "Best Game Lodge" Award at the 1998 and 2001 Conference & Exhibition Venue Awards. Or maybe it's just that we offer distinctive service in every way.

Bush Walks
Each day guests are offered the opportunity to experience our Nature
Reserve on foot. Bush Walks provide a unique opportunity for nature
lovers and adventure seekers to experience the amazing African wildlife
up close. Each bush walk is led by a highly qualified, enthusiastic,
Game Guide ensuring guests safely experience this unique experience.
Depending on their age, young children will join in open game drive
vehicles for safety reasons. Guests will kick-start the day with
steaming hot coffee and homemade rusks, before venturing out at around
6:30 am. At around 8:00 am guest return to sit down to a sumptuous
breakfast buffet.
Game Drives
Our highly skilled Game Guides will accompany guests in the morning and
early evening in open 4x4 game drive vehicles. Their extensive
knowledge and training ensures that your game experience will be
unforgettable, exciting and informative. This private reserve is known
for its close encounters with a vast variety of game including the Big
Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). In addition, all
game drives on the reserve coordinate their game viewing activities
which ensure the best of sightings. Halfway through the early evening
game drive there's a stop for sundowners and snacks, before returning
to the lodge at around 7:00 pm, with enough time to freshen up before
sitting down to a buffet dinner served in the open air boma (weather
permitting).
Activity time table will vary in summer and winter months.
Bird Watching
Avid bird watchers will not be disappointed when visiting
the Pilanesberg. The park is home to almost 360 species of birds which
can be enjoyed all year round, although the best time for viewing is
from November to April when the migrant species have returned. The
variety of habitats available to these birds range from grasslands,
rocky outcrops, woodlands, and dams which is why the variety of species
is so vast.
Swimming
Just a short walk from the main deck, down the cobbled
pathways of the lodge, will bring you to the swimming pool, a place of
refuge from the hot African sun. Encircled with reed walls to maintain
privacy and adorned with umbrellas and loungers to recline on, this
space offers guests the perfect retreat to take a dip in the cool,
clear water or soak up the sun while enjoying a good book. Refreshments
and snacks can be offered poolside too, ensuring you have a truly lazy
afternoon to just enjoy yourself.
Bush Dinners
One of the most charming dining experiences Tshukudu has
on offer is a short trip into the African bush where our guests can
immerse themselves in nature while dining under the stars. With the
fireplace as your centerpiece, expect to be served a starter of warm
soup, followed by a traditional South African braai (barbeque) buffet,
plated dessert, and an assorted cheeseboard to conclude.
As the meal comes to an end and the moon makes its way across the
near-midnight sky, allow our rangers to entertain you for a little
longer as they share an assortment of authentic African stories, fables
and legends. This is a truly unforgettable experience and not to be
missed. Group bookings essential.

General Information
Keep clothing colours as neutral and as light as possible, so you blend
in better with the surrounding environment. Khaki, beige, brown and
green are generally best, as darker and brighter colours attract
unwanted mosquitoes and insects.
During certain times of the year malaria may be more prevalent in
certain areas and we therefore suggest a mosquito repellent like
Peaceful Sleep or something similar. Alternatively contact your local
GP regarding the necessity of malaria prophylaxis.
